>> Hi, I was reading about how great some of these other types
>> of batteries are. So, I was wanting to ask, Why Using Flooded
>> Lead Acid Batteries in the systems?
Sure, yes, it's quite simple. The Price/Performance of Flooded lead acid batteries is the best available. Nothing else comes close in value, performance, or availability. Further, because we use Golf Cart batteries we get the best value, better, by using commodity batteries.
Flooded lead acid batteries have been around longest, used the longest in solar and wind electric systems. That's why Flooded lead acid batteries are still used in the majority of wind/solar energy systems. The price performance value is because Flooded lead acid batteries have the longest life and the least cost per amp-hour of any of the choices.
Flooded lead acid battery banks require regular maintenance in the form of watering, equalizing charges and keeping the top and terminals clean. Our favorite recommended flooded lead-acid battery to use in solar and wind electric systems is the 6 volt Golf Cart batteries, the favorite being the Interstate U2200 or comprable. That's a 232ah 6v Deep Cycle Golf Cart Battery. If you can't find the Interstate U2200, find a comprable 200 to 232ah 6v Deep Cycle Golf Cart Battery.
FLA (Flooded Lead-Acid) Deep Cycle Batteries, sometimes referred to as “wet cells”, are commonly used in wind, solar, and hydroelectric power systems. FLA Batteries come in many different sizes and capacities. Flooded Lead Acid batteries have a sulphuric acid solution, this reacts with the lead plates in the cells to produce electricity.
FLA, Always Enclosed, Always Vented:
When electrolysis occurs, or the battery is charging, hydrogen and oxygen gases are produced in a normal process called “outgassing”. The gases may rise from the cells from the caps, results to keep in mind as the batteries charge:
(A) Using FLA batteries for your WindEnergy7 Wind/Solar Hybrid energy system means that you are committed to regularly monitoring and maintaining the batteries. Periodically you will add distilled water to each of the cells as needed.
(B) Using FLA batteries for your WindEnergy7 Wind/Solar Hybrid energy system means that you are committed to install correctly. These batteries must go in a cabinet, box, or closet with a vent to the outside. Most installations use atleast a 4" dryer style duct to the outside to continually allow the gasses to escape the cabinet. The presence and accumulation of these explosive and corrosive gases is dangerous and requires that you take proper precaution when installing. Hydrogen and oxygen gases are very dangerous and must be vented to the outside to prevent build up.
Flooded Lead Acid Batteries are the best kind. But to be REALLY CLEAR:
FLA batteries require battery maintenance, and appropriate venting and installation. They are safe and effective if installed correctly and checked on every few months.
